How often to change power steering fluid

old power steering fluid like this can ruin your the system’s a type of hydraulic fluid that gets dirty and worn out when you swap it you can get rid of noises in your power steering fluid pump and the system but you can also prevent your rock and pinion system from failing early, the secret to changing your power steering fluid so quickly and thoroughly is this tool. 

now this is called the vacuum pump and you can get them for as low as 30 dollars all the way up to about 100 for a top the model now you can use this thing for all

sorts of things you can change oil transmission fluid and in our case, this is the best and fastest way to change all of our power steerings fluid in under five minutes.

gotta start by getting a couple of quarts of the right kind of power steering fluid for your car or truck now an easy way to figure it out is to just take a look at the cap they often print the kind you need right on the cap but if they don’t just look at your owner’s manuals to get the right one.

now this is an older car and it uses a dexron type 3 fluid you want to buy at least two quarts to make sure you can get the job done.

place a rag around your power steering fluid reservoir you are going to spill just a little bit and this rag will prevent anything from getting on a belt or a hose take the cap off the power steering fluid reservoir and you’re going to insert the hose from your vacuum pump

what you’re doing here is you’re going to suck out all the fluid that’s sitting in the reservoir and this is really easy to do with this tool and you’ll see that it just takes a few seconds once you pump up the handle, good so now our tank is empty and we’re ready to move on to the next step we’ve got to find the return line feeding into our power steering fluid reservoir.

now this is easy to do even if you’ve got a different style setup on all reservoirs you’re going to have a line going in and out the line we’re looking for is the higher mounted one this is the return line where the fluid is going to be going back into the reservoir with our return line identified we’ve just got to remove the clamp and pull off the hose. 

now you won’t have any fluid leaking out because you already drained out the Reservoir and because power steering fluid is such a good lubricant these lines will usually come off pretty easily.

We need to plug off this port just temporarily so you can use something  like a scrap piece of tubing to close it off now of course the tubing is open at the end so a handy trick is to take the cap of a pen and insert it into the tubing to seal off the end.

now you don’t have to do this you can use a clamp folded over or maybe you even have a rubber type of plug but no matter what you do you want to make sure that you seal it up so that no fluid leaks out during the Process.

take the line from your vacuum pump and you’ll insert it right into the return hose of the power steering fluid system now this is going to actually suck the fluid through the system this is how you’ll get every bit of the dirty fluid out.

Now you’ll want to then refill your reservoir with clean fluid. the level here doesn’t matter; you can actually feel it all the way to the top if you want because you’re going to be pulling this fluid out and you can adjust the level Later.

i also decided to clamp off that capped port even more to make sure that no fluid would leak out now we’re ready to start just pump up your vacuum pump a few times and you’ll see that dirty fluid start to come out this is the best way to do it because that new fluid is actually going into the power steering rack itself and then the old fluid is being forcedout the other direction.

the old fluid didn’t look that bad in the hose so i poured it into a cup to compare you can see the dramatic difference from the old fluid to the new fluid the stuff had almost two hundred thousand miles on it and was fifteen years old.

keep topping off the reservoir to make sure you have enough clean fluid and then this will start to go through the system and in just a minute or two you’ll actually see that bright fluid coming out the other end is looking pretty good here but i went ahead and still ran another quart through the system to make sure that all the old fluid was completely out.

glue is looking great so i’m going to go ahead and stop the process and to do that i just need to pull the hose out of my return line and because this is under vacuum not pressure as soon as i pull it out i’m not going to pill anything in fact the pump is going to suck up anything in the hose that’s left.

Now we’ve just got to reconnect our hose to the port on the reservoir but remember our reservoir is filled with fluid, so the trick to getting this done with as little mess as possible is to have your finger ready and when you pull the hose off, cap the end temporarily with the end of your finger.

now with that done you’ve just got to grab your return hose and slip it into place now if you do this quick you’re not going to really spill anything but if you spill a little bit that’s not a problem you can go ahead and just top up the reservoir everything’s looking great so we can put our clamp back on our return line and now we’ve just got to check the level of fluid in the reservoir.

remember on these systems there’s a hot mark and a cold mark the fluid is cold so make sure you’re setting it to the cold mark now my case i needed to add a little bit more fluid but if you found that you had too much you can use your vacuum pump to just suck out a little bit from the tank now we can just tighten up the cap and we’re ready to start the engine.

now i recommend letting it idle for about a minute just to let things circulate in the power steering fluid system and then go ahead and rotate your steering wheel all the way to the right and the left several times you just want to make sure that things feel right and that everything seems normal once you’ve done this i recommend shutting off the engine and checking the level one more time.

the fluid is not going to be hot at this point but you want to make sure that it’s still at the correct position now with that done you can go ahead and take the car for a test drive and see the results.

as soon as i got the truck on the road i could not believe the difference this thing actually steered like it was a new truck again there was no more vagueness and the wine i was getting from the power steering fluid pump was gone so do this early on and not only will you get better steering you can save money in the long run so if you found this article helpful got you to see something you might be able to do yourself.
